چکیده

We consider the system of articulators “jaw – tip of the tongue” in order to investigate instant and integral optimality criteria in the variational approach to the solution of speech inverse problem “from total displacement of articulators to their controls”. The required experimental data i.e., coordinates of the tip of the tongue and lower incisor have been measured by the use of the X-ray microbeam system together with EMGs of masseter, longitudinalis superior and longitudinalis inferior. These data have been registered for sequences of syllable /ta/ with different articulation rates, as well as for an elevation and lowering of the tongue tip in nonspeech mode. We analyze instant and integral criteria of the work, kinetic energy, elastic and inertial forces for the system. In speech mode, total displacements of the tongue tip and the jaw are simulated perfectly by the use of any instant and integral criterion, mentioned above. At the same time, the own displacements of the tongue tip and the jaw are reproduced well by means of integral criteria only. On the contrary, the own displacements in non-speech mode are reproduced satisfactory only by the use of any instant optimality criterion.

Criteria of optimality for sensors’ location based on adjoint transformation of observation data interpolation error

Criteria of optimality for sensors’ location are addressed using an interpolation error transformed by especial adjoint problems. Considered criteria correspond to the analysis error in certain Hessian based metrics and to the error of some forecast aspect. Both criteria are obtained using adjoint problems that provide computation without direct use of the Hessian. For an inverse heat conductio...

Effect of Tone Height on Jaw and Tongue Articulation in Mandarin Chinese

This study investigates some of the articulatory changes that occur due to the tonal conditions of the syllable; specifically, jaw, tongue and formant frequency changes. Articulatory and acoustic data were collected using the electromagnetic articulatograph (EMA) at NTT Research Laboratories (Atsugi, Japan) from two native female speakers of Mandarin Chinese producing Tones 1 and 3 on monosylla...

Model-based identification of motion sensor placement for tracking retraction and elongation of the tongue.

Electromagnetic articulography (EMA) is designed to track facial and tongue movements. In practice, the EMA sensors for tracking the movement of the tongue's surface are placed heuristically. No recommendation exists. Within this paper, a model-based approach providing a mathematical analysis and a computational-based recommendation for the placement of sensors, which is based on the tongue's e...

Interarticulator cohesion within coronal consonant production.

If more than one articulator is involved in the execution of a phonetic task, then the individual articulators have to be temporally coordinated with each other in a lawful manner. The present study aims at analyzing tongue-jaw cohesion in the temporal domain for the German coronal consonants [s, f, t, d, n, l], i.e., consonants produced with the same set of articulators--the tongue blade and t...
